Xena and Gabrielle contemplate the future until they are confronted by a monk from Japa who says he has been sent by Akemi - a girl from Xena's past. He tells Xena and Gabrielle about his confrontation with Yodoshi and how his friend wasn't quite so lucky as to escape.

Akemi and Xena travel through a snowy woodland when Akemi shows Xena a poem she's written for her, which is, as it happens, a love poem. Xena continues telling the story to Gabrielle and how she came to obtain a deadly katana.

Xena and Gabrielle arrive in Higuchi to see the town ablaze. The two execute a complex set of acrobatics in order to reach the town's water tower. Releasing the water supply soon puts out the flames and saves the village from destruction.

Xena finishes her tale of what happened in Higuchi the last time she was there and it turns out that Akemi, having learned the pinch from Xena, killed Yodoshi much to Xena's annoyance. Furthermore, Xena had to execute her friend to negate the shame she had bought upon her family. Back in the present, Xena teaches Gabrielle how to listen to the world around her. She then discovers that only another ghost can kill Yodoshi...

Xena takes Gabrielle aside and teaches her the pinch. Gabrielle gets distressed by this as she doesn't know what Xena is planning and why she's teaching her all her skills all of a sudden. The pair leave and prepare for battle. As Gabrielle leads the army, Xena disappears into the woodland.
